Too Human Demo: Too much that has been done before

Contributed by Ron C.

I recently played the Too Human Demo that was made available on XBL. I’ll admit that I was a little intrigued by the Norse mythology and screen shots I had seen. Playing the game is a whole different story. It isn’t the worst game I’ve ever played, but almost every part of the demo seemed like something I had done before. I wish that was the only problem. The control scheme felt very out of place, but I’ll get to that later.

The main problem I found was the fact that every aspect of the game reminded me of something I had played months ago, but not as good. The best way I can describe it is if Mass Effect and Halo had an illegitimate child. The game’s RPG elements were reminiscent of Mass Effect, just not as deep and interesting. The level design, music and massive amounts of useless computer controlled marines that serve as cannon fodder feel like Halo.

The Graphics were just OK, considering it’s a next gen game. The large, wide open levels did look pretty good. I’ll give it that. The story is a little strange though. The demo doesn’t give you much of the story either. You are some sort of super human, Norse god-like creature whose job is to protect humanity from killer robots. Enough said.

At the start of the demo you can choose a class (Champion, Commando, Berserker). You can obtain better armor and weapons through combat. You also level up and choose a skill from the “skill tree” with earned experience (XP). That’s about the extent of it.

The combat system was probably the biggest letdown for me. You’ve the standard primary and secondary projectile weapon fire triggers, a button for your “magic”, and the right thumbstick is used for your melee weapon. This is the biggest problem. The firearms I got the chance to use were underpowered and mostly useless, so I always had to resort to melee against hordes of mechanical wolf-like creatures. It’s very difficult to move and execute combos in a crowd of eighty enemies, especially when your forty marines do nothing more than get murdered. I just resorted to using one sweeping attack over and over again.

In closing, this game is not a terrible game. The graphics aren’t bad, but the story is a little out there. My major problems with it are the controls suck and it felt like a rip off of other games. All I can say is that Silicon Knights won’t get my $60.00.
